Today I welcome Paige Woolen and her 1-year-old bulldog Darla Mae to the ranch. The case may sound familiar to many homes: when Paige is on her phone, Darla Mae bites and humps; the harness takes 30 minutes to put on; excitement rules the house. It is Darla Mae’s birthday, and the best gift we can give her is calm leadership and clear structure.
We start with energy, not commands. Phones create disconnection. Excitement fills the gap. I show Paige how to enter with silence, calmness, and confidence so Darla Mae can follow instead of perform. We switch from a harness that encourages pulling to a simple leash that guides the mind. We teach distance from food, claim space, and use a light touch to “snap the brain out of it” without harm. Think Mexican mom with the chancla vibe: a quick, clear signal, then peace.
We also address something deeper. Paige carried grief from a soul dog she lost, and that soft, unresolved energy shaped how Darla Mae met the world. When the human energy shifts, the dog shifts with it. You will see Darla Mae move from happy-go-lucky chaos to calm surrender in minutes, then earn freedom and affection after structure.
To test species respect, we introduce a wise 45-year-old bird at a distance. Darla Mae chooses respect over prey drive, because the ritual and energy were right. That is how you safely prepare for cats, babies, and new pack members.
Key Lessons You Can Use Today
Enter neutral: no touch, no talk, no eye contact until the energy is balanced.
Order matters: silence, calmness, confidence, then love and joy.
Leash = guidance. Harnesses were built to pull or track. Guide first, then reward with the harness later.
Distance teaches respect. Start with food on the floor. Reward calm waiting, not excitement.
The touch is information, not punishment. A light tap can interrupt fixation so the brain can relax.
Walk, follow, play, explore. Freedom comes after structure.
Replace phone time with presence. The dog will choose calm when the human is truly there.
Grief changes energy. When you heal, your dog feels safe.
Your 21-Day Plan
Daily pack walk before affection or play
Door ritual every time you enter
Food-distance practice twice a day
Leash guidance indoors during high-excitement moments
