Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has taken suo motu cognisance of concerns over the redefinition of the Aravalli Hills, a move that many fear could enable unchecked mining and ecological destruction. A vacation bench led by the CJI, along with Justices J.K. Maheshwari and A.G. Masih, is set to hear the matter on Monday.

Environmental groups say the new definition — 100m elevation minimum, 500m spacing — may legalise mining and construction in fragile zones across Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat. With desertification risk, groundwater decline, and illegal mining already impacting the region, all eyes are now on the Supreme Court as it reassesses the future of one of India’s most crucial ecological shields.
