Samorost 2 is a short and simple point-and-click puzzle game from Amanita Design, where you help a small space gnome on a quest to rescue his dog who has been kidnapped by aliens. The game can be completed in under an hour, consisting of only twelve very short levels, with no inventory system, little story, and almost no dialogue. Also note, you don’t need to have played the original Samorost to enjoy it, and all achievements unlock naturally just by finishing the game.
The puzzles themselves are creative and encourage experimentation and unconventional approaches. Some solutions lean into trial and error, and at times the abstract graphics themselves make it unclear what you're interacting with. Solutions can feel deliberately obscure, but not tedious enough to be frustrating. Some puzzles were even deceptively tricky, requiring multiple steps or coordination, but there were only three puzzles that held me up for any amount of time.
The main drawback is its length. While what is there is enjoyable, it's hard to justify a full-price purchase, when even other Amanita titles offer much better value. And even at less than an hour, the pacing can feel slow in places.
Another concerning issue comes from reports of bugs in recent Steam user reviews, with multiple players noting puzzle soft-locks that necessitate restarting the level. While I didn’t personally encounter these, if you don’t realize you’re stuck due to a bug, rather than the puzzle itself, it sounds like a potentially seriously frustrating issue.
Overall, Samorost 2 delivers a fun hour of absurd surrealism wrapped in Amanita Design's signature style. It is enjoyable while it lasts, but hard to recommend at full price, given the limited content and bug reports.
