The House of Representatives has passed the harmonized version of the Electoral Bill 2026, approving the electronic transmission of results directly from each polling unit across the federation to the Independent National Electoral Commission Results Viewing Portal (IREV).

The bill was passed during an emergency sitting, reinforcing lawmakers’ commitment to strengthening transparency and credibility in Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of future general elections.

Under the new provisions, election results from polling units will be electronically transmitted to INEC’s IREV platform to enhance public access and real-time monitoring.

However, the House also endorsed Clause 60 of the bill, which provides a safeguard:
✔️ If electronic transmission fails due to internet challenges,
✔️ Form EC8A will serve as the primary source for collation and declaration of results by INEC.

This dual approach is designed to balance technological advancement with practical realities, particularly in areas with limited network connectivity.

Observers say the amendment could significantly shape preparations for upcoming elections, especially regarding transparency, logistics, and public confidence in the electoral system.
