(18 Sep 2021) Dozens of people from the rebel-controlled city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine travelled to Russia on Saturday to take part in the second day of voting in Russia's parliamentary elections.
They were among more than 700 residents of the region's breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk republics who cast their ballots in the neighbouring Rostov region of Russia, according to TASS state news agency,
Voters setting out from a bus station in Donetsk said they hoped their vote will help the region to become fully integrated with Russia.
"We have made our choice in 2014, but Russia still doubts it," said Irina Reshitova. "It will be direct confirmation that we are with them."
The separatist conflict in Ukraine's eastern industrial heartland, known as the Donbass, erupted in April 2014.
Russian-speaking rebels proclaimed "people's republics" in the Donetsk and the Luhansk regions.
Over 538,000 Ukrainians living in areas held by Russia-backed rebels have Russian passports.
