Get out and about with Aimee Aul, City of Fullerton Educator, on video! This one hour walk highlights treasures from the "New Deal" of the 1930s. Get some steps in and learn about how Fullerton weathered the Great Depression and came out stronger than ever!

The 1930s was quite a decade. It was also a time of great transformation here in Fullerton. The Great Depression, bookended on one end by the stock market crash in October 1929 and World War II on the other, impacted the lives of Americans all across the country, prompting a massive response from the Federal Government unlike any other in American history. By the time the decade was over, Fullerton, along with hundreds of towns and cities across the land, was fundamentally transformed by programs from Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s “New Deal.”
So what exactly was the New Deal?

The New Deal was the response of President Roosevelt and his administration to the calamity of the Great Depression. Roosevelt and the New Dealers launched scores of programs to help Americans suffering from poverty and hardship. These programs were controversial at the time; many Americans didn’t like the idea of a Federal government with such broad powers. But for the most part, the New Deal worked. A dizzying array of efforts with their smart acronyms…WPA, CCC, TVA…And we see its lasting contribution to civic life all over Fullerton. Come join me on a walking tour of a few of Fullerton’s New Deal landmarks and we’ll take a little trip back in time.
