As we head towards the end of the year I thought it would be cool to archive another title that came out in 2025. This year me and my good friend Wuzi have completed and archived the previous co-op games by Josef Fares and all that was left was Split Fiction.
Many praised the title, but most people mentioned that it simply felt like "more of It Takes Two". Even Josef himself did a video where he listed the top 10 best co-op games of all time and he had It Takes Two above Split Fiction.
I have to admit that I was a little surprised by this, as I thought that Split Fiction was the developer's best game yet! Now I have a weak spot for Cyberpunk and Fantasy settings so this was exactly up my alley. The toy setting of It Takes Two was also a bit less to my liking, but overall I think Split Fiction has way better pacing and variety.
We play as Zoe and Mio who are both writers of different genres. Through a horrible accident we get sucked up in our own stories and now have to escape. The opening half hour is very bombastic and immediately sets up a much more epic tone than It Takes Two did. So much is happening on screen and the pacing often does not let up. One thing that is very smart is that there are side stories that bring variety to the main world you are currently in. The main world often revolves around a certain gameplay mechanic and by having these side stories in between, you get a segment that feels entirely different. They are also more in depth than the minigames in previous titles like It Takes Two and A Way Out.
Split Fiction is an absolute joy to play and it is also surprisingly challenging at times. I can say that this year I have turned into a fan of Josef Fares's work and I cannot wait to see what he has in store for us next.
