New Year’s Eve is rapidly approaching, which means celebrations will be in full swing. Did you know that 42% of traffic crashes that occur on New Year’s Eve are a result of people driving while intoxicated? It’s an extremely dangerous night to be out on the roads - one of the most dangerous nights of the year, in fact. Toyota of Orlando is here to share safety tips to help you spot and react to drunk driving.

Our first tip? Put your best defensive driving skills to use. The best way to spot a drunk driver is to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Do away with all distractions and keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. You’ll also want to employ defensive driving tactics like leaving plenty of space between you and other vehicles and following the rules of the road.

Next, let’s talk about how to spot a drunk driver. Here are some of the major signs that you’re sharing the road with someone who’s intoxicated:

Weaving or drifting in and out of lanes or driving in the middle of the road
Headlights not turned on and turn signals not used appropriately
Swerving around turns or taking them too wide
Braking or accelerating aggressively
Almost hitting objects or other cars
Tailgating or being aggressive toward other drivers
Driving noticeably under the speed limit
Driving with their face close to the windshield

So now you know how to spot a drunk driver - how should you react? Here are some tips:

Call the police to report the driver
Never try to approach or stop them - this could lead to a confrontation or collision
If you follow them, be sure to do so at a distance to stay out of their path
Take note of the vehicle’s details - make and model, paint color, and any distinguishing characteristics like stickers or damage
Also take note of what direction they are heading, the street they are on, and any crossroads so you can report it to the police

If you are hit by a drunk driver, immediately call 911. Stay in your vehicle if you can, and if the driver tries to approach you, film them on your phone camera so you can give the footage to the police when they arrive. Be sure to take detailed photos of the accident scene, the damage to both cars, and your injuries. Also be sure to get a copy of the police report and the insurance information of the other driver.
