This presentation explains how antigypsyism as a construction of European history. Forged as a concept during the slavery period in Romanian-speaking principalities (mid 14th century to mid19th), "the gypsies" (ţiganii, i.e the slaves) are distinct from "the romanians" (rumâni, i.e. the bonds). in the middle of 19th century, the "rumânii" form the nation of the new state of "Rômania", while the "ţiganii", cease being slaves but remain the antithesis of "rumâni"... In the same period, the "nomads" in France are subjected to a legal status inspired by the categories of the colonized populations. In the same way as in the process of construction of the Romanian national identity, the French citizen is then being constructed using molds and negatives such as the "indigenous", the "warrants" and the "nomads". "Nomads" like "ţigani" are a magma of various populations melt by antigypsyism. Majority of them are Rromani, but not all of them (for example the Rudari/Beaşi in Romania or Yeniches and other "Voyageurs" in France). However, all experience the same form of racism, called antigypsyism. Antigypsyism created "the gypsies" for using them as the contrary of various national identities in Europe. It still operates nowadays, and among others makes difficult the autonomous affirmation of the various groups melt in the magma called "gypsies" and other equivalent names in European languages (zingari, tsiganes, cikan, gabel, magjup, kurbat, jevg...). As any other racism, antigypsyism has to be fought against. Fighting it means however deconstructing first "the gypsies" as a mental category and giving the necessary space to each group amalgamated in it to recover its identity in an autonomous way. This deconstruction can heal not only the identities of the groups and individuals targeted by antigypsyism, but also many national identities that for too long excluded one part of them (i.e. Rromani people). In a Europe more and more threatened by extremism, this way is vital, and not only for Rromani people...
