(14 Sep 2014) A Sikh temple in the flood-hit city of Srinagar has opened its doors to help thousands of people evacuated from their inundated homes in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
Hundreds of families who have lost their homes and belongings in the deluge have taken shelter at the makeshift relief camp set up at the temple premises.
Medical teams in Srinagar were stepping up efforts to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases, officials said on Saturday as the water level receded in many parts of the city.
Families staying at the shelter said they were in a desperate situation.
"We are left with just one blanket, we are facing tremendous difficulties, we are afraid of the spread of diseases, what will we do to protect our children? Where will we go? We have nowhere to go. Whatever belongings we have, they all are in flood waters now," said Sweety Kaur, mother of a young child.
A team leader for the local charity group "United Sikhs" said they were running a medical camp with a few doctors and have helped more than 4,000 people in need of treatment.
Volunteers from the charity group are also arranging the transport of food supplies and clean drinking water to flood victims still in their homes.
About 200 people have died in Indian-controlled Kashmir as a consequence of the floods.
