In Keezhadi, near Madurai, archaeologists uncovered artifacts that may date the Sangam Age back to the 6th century BCE ,possibly as old as the Indus Valley Civilization/ Harappa Civilization. This challenges long-held historical narratives centered in North India.

But when archaeologist Amarnath Ramakrishna submitted his report, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) asked for revisions. He refused and was transferred from Tamil Nadu to Noida.

This triggered backlash.
Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin and the DMK claim this is an attempt by the BJP-led Central Government to suppress Tamil and Dravidian heritage. For the Dravidian movement, Keezhadi is more than just ruins, it’s proof of an ancient, advanced Tamil civilization, independent of Vedic or Aryan influence.

Meanwhile, Union Culture Minister Gajendra Shekhawat defended the ASI, saying the report lacked “technical support.” He claimed one dig cannot change Indian history and that decisions should be left to experts, not politicians.

Keezhadi has become a flashpoint where archaeology meets politics, and history becomes a tool of identity.
