BLOODWINGS: PUMPKINHEAD'S REVENGE is a first person shooter with FMV elements for PC DOS. It was developed by BAP Interactive and released by Electronic Arts and the Motion Picture Corporation of America Interactive in 1995. Its story is based on the movie PUMPKINHEAD 2: BLOOD WINGS from which the game borrows a number of clips.

I need to get this off my chest right at the beginning: This game is a horrible experience! It’s rough, it’s tedious and it’s unfair. Don’t play it, it will steal your soul! I guess I’m one of the five people on this Earth that finished it… so I guess that’s an accomplishment.

I like the basic idea that you have to manipulate and watch movies to achieve goals in the 3D world. However, the big problem with the title is the piss-poor execution of its gameplay as well as all the technical aspects. First of all, everything in this game is so goddamn cryptic and even though it is pretty short, it takes the player forever to understand and master all its various mechanics. Executing all demanded tasks without dying nonstop is almost impossible. The 3D part of the game reminds you of really shitty 90s DOOM clones. The controls are gliding as fuck, precise movement is not possible. On top of that, the game has huge performance issues. It lags, it stutters, it glitches (as you can see in this video). The user interface is unintuitive and the mouse controls can only be described as sluggish and broken. Worst of all is the movie quality: the codec that they used is probably the worst I have ever seen in any FMV game. Especially clips with a lot of movement or cuts are so blocky and full of artifacts that you are literally left guessing what the hell is just going on (that pretty much goes for every killing scene you will encounter). I really need to stress this: This is NOT a recording or Youtube issue! The quality of the movies really is that bad. For an FMV game, this is absolutely unacceptable.

Anyway, if you have never played this game yourself, you probably have no idea what is going on in this longplay. Describing everything that needs to be done and achieved to finish or even understand the game would take far too long, so I just give you the basics. If you really want to know all the details, I recommend mmntw26's written walkthrough on GameFAQs (but be warned - it's a very long read) that has also helped me tremendously in my quest. Basically, the game is split into three levels:

Level 1 ("Periphery"):
Killing enemies will open a passageway to some weird FMV flying scenes in which you can collect crystals. They are needed for ammo and to activate movie portals.
Watch all movie portals in this level. The portals show various clips from the second Pumpkinhead movie. In those clips, you can collect various items. Most of them are needed for a special purpose or to finish the game.
Open all chests with a key you get from one of the movie portals. Most of them have glyphs inside. One random glyph is needed to finish the level.
At the end of the map, you will face the Gatekeeper. Find out which glyph he desires, then solve his riddle. If you answer correctly, you move on to Level 2.

Level 2 ("Purgatory"):
Movie portals will show Pumpkinhead kill various characters of the movie. Most of them are supposed to get killed as they are bad guys. However, you must rescue all the innocent characters with the help of the voodoo doll. Once you have saved a person, you must fight off Pumpkinhead. Killed characters give you special items (three pieces of a medallion and four toys) that you will need in the final level.
You need to free nine souls that are trapped all over the level. After you have freed them, they get teleported to a special room where you have to collect them all over again.
Killed enemies will get teleported to the Hell Room which you need to pass to get to the final room (unless you trigger a shortcut - which I did in this longplay). If you don't know the shortcut, you are pretty much fucked.
In the final room, solve another one of the Gatekeeper's riddles to move on to the final level.

Level 3 ("Lair”):
Watch two movie portals to finish off the last bad guy and to find out which one of the toys you collected in level 2 eases Pumpkinhead's soul.
Proceed to middle of the map and open Pumpkinhead's lair with the three parts of the medallion from level 2.
Give Pumpkinhead the toy he desires.

Health can be acquired by shooting bouncy balls in the out of bounds zone of nothingness. If you lose orientation out there, you are fucked. You will never find your way back to the actual level.

Played on easy mode. Emulated in DosBox SVN. RIP my soul.
