"Good morning St. Louis! Welcome to the STL Coffee Tour, coffee lovers! In our first episode, we're visiting Sump Coffee, located at 3700 South Jefferson. This South City roaster and coffee shop has something for everyone - whether you're a coffee traditionalist or adventurer.
The team at Sump is dedicated to crafting the perfect cup of coffee, no matter the brewing method. They strive for a unique flavor profile that brings out the bright, fruity notes in the bean. And with a streamlined menu to guide you on your journey, owner Scott Carey and his iconic beard are on a mission to find the grail of coffee.
The shop itself is located in a corner brick building with black wood trim and features a clean, monochromatic design accented by reclaimed wood and the shops’ bearded skull logo art. A long table in the middle provides communal seating for 8-10 and there are stools at the railing around the wall for additional seating in the main area. A smaller section in the back offers space for group meetings and side projects.
Today, I'll be getting a bag of beans and trying a pour over coffee and one of their specialty espresso drinks to show you how they make deliciousness happen. Pour Over – For today’s pour over cup I chose Sump Coffee’s Melting Darkness. It’s a single origin Peruvian dark roast coffee with a beautiful flavor complexity, moderate acidity, and smooth finish. It is a fruit forward roast with notes of rich dark cherry, caramel, and cocoa. Beautifully balanced in acidity and sweetness with a slightly earthy undertone, this is a great full flavor coffee that really exemplifies their mission statement at Sump. The last time I visited they didn’t have a Dark roast so this is a pleasant surprise today and one of my new favorite roasts! So I had to buy a bag for home!
Espresso Drink – For today’s espresso drink I chose one of their Seasonal Specialties, The Winter Solstice. It’s a caramel latte made with their Costa Rica espresso and has hints of orange, ginger, and winter spices. The latte has a rich, full-bodied flavor with a moderate acidity and a smooth finish. The espresso adds a layer of bold chocolatiness while the caramel, orange and ginger give it the perfect sweetness. Balanced by the whole milk that adds a creamy texture and a subtle sweetness to the overall taste, the Winter Solstice is a flavorful espresso drink with beautiful flavor, creamy texture, and pleasant mouthfeel that enhances the flavors from the coffee without drowning out the coffee.
