President John F. Kennedy’s remarks upon his arrival in Bonn, Germany. President John F. Kennedy shakes hands with Chancellor of West Germany, Konrad Adenauer during his arrival ceremony at Wahn Airport in Bonn, West Germany (Federal Republic); Director of Radio in the American Sector (RIAS) in Berlin and translator for President Kennedy, Robert Lochner, stands left of the President. Clifton; Special Assistant to the President for National Security, McGeorge Bundy; Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs, William R. Tyler; U.S. Chief of Protocol, Angier Biddle Duke; West German Ambassador to the United States, Karl Heinrich Knappstein; Federal Minister of Defense of West Germany, Kai-Uwe von Hassel; Vice Chancellor of West Germany, Dr. Ludwig Erhard. In his speech the President commends Chancellor Konrad Adenauer of the Federal Republic of Germany on West Germany's economic recovery, announces the end of the United States's tradition of isolationism, and discusses the importance of strengthening the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in order to achieve unity amongst European nations.
