Shoplifters in London thought they were in the clear when stealing from shops, stores and businesses – but they were being watched and Metropolitan Police officers took decisive action.

Recent CCTV and police bodycam footage shows how police officers across London tracked down suspects and made targeted arrests in seven separate cases.

Met police officers set up sting operations and used covert tactics to catch the criminals in the act, confronting and tackling the suspects to ensure they will face justice in court.

0:11 – 0:54 Two men, with previous convictions for theft, were arrested after targeting a Co-op in Hackney in December 2024. Officers saw the incident unfold on CCTV and detained the men, who both pleaded guilty were and sentenced to 10 and 12 months’ imprisonment respectively.

0:54 – 01:22 A man was handed a 12 month suspended sentence for regularly targeting a Tesco Express in Leytonstone. Officers were called to the store in January 2025 after he was apprehended by staff after attempting to steal a large amount of alcohol.

01:22 – 01:44 Earlier this year, officers in Colindale made 18 arrests in the space of just four days and secured 85 charges as part of a crackdown on shoplifting. In one case, officers arrested a man wanted for a string of thefts in the area acting suspiciously outside a Co-op on East Barnet Road on 1 February. He was later convicted and jailed for 20 weeks.

01:44 – 02:12 Officers worked with staff in a Tesco Express in Hackney to identify two prolific shoplifters. Through analysing CCTV, they linked the pair to more than 30 thefts. The man pleaded guilty to 19 counts of thefts and was sentenced to 9 months’ imprisonment and a 5 year Criminal Behaviour Order. The woman pleaded guilty to 12 counts of theft and is due to be sentenced.

02:13 – 02:41 Officers secured an order to ban a prolific shoplifter from every Greggs store in England and Wales after he targeted a store on Wood Green High Road seven times.

02:41 – 03:18 A group of five individuals stole items from a Boots on Lower Marsh Road. The theft was reported to neighbourhood officers and three suspects were arrested.

03:18 – 03:29 – Two offenders were arrested at Sainsbury’s in Romford during a proactive operation to tackle shoplifting in February 2025.

03:29 – 03:49 – Officers arrested a man at the Co-op in Orpington for shoplifting in February 2025. The suspect was given a three year Criminal Behaviour Order, banning him from all Co-op stores in England and Wales.
