Leihlo la Sechaba: Zandspruit

This week on Leihlo la Sechaba, we look at the root causes of endless protests in Zandspruit.

Zandspruit, one of the oldest informal settlements in South Africa, is situated in north-west Johannesburg. For the past four years, the community has complained about lack of service delivery.

Leihlo la Sechaba investigated the situation and discovered that the area is badly over populated with over 16 000 shacks on 206 stands only.

Eskom has cut electricity supply to the area to stop power supply to illegal connections. However, legal electricity users are up in arms because now they also do not have electricity.

Other service delivery issues, including water supply and sanitation, also plague the area.
