On 13th May 2021, we lost a great friend, and the world an incomparable musical talent: composer, saxophonist and clarinettist Matt Dibble.

On 14th June, Divine Art Recordings will release renowned pianist Freddy Kempf’s recording of Matt’s final work – the 24 Preludes and Fugues Matt had been working on, in secret, in the six years before his untimely death.

The performance marking above – ‘Defiantly, almost aggressively, positive and energetic’ – appears over the final fugue of the set, and this somehow encapsulates Matt the composer and musician, and the spirit of these pieces. The 24 pairs of preludes and fugues in this collection showcase Matt’s extremely catholic tastes and skills as a composer, borrowing as they do from classical, jazz and free improvisation, pop, klezmer and folk music.

The project has been funded by the amazing generosity of 226 people who donated close to £18,000 via a Crowdfunder launched in October 2021.

The album will be available on CD and on all the usual streaming platforms from 14TH JUNE, and there’ll be a mini-documentary to watch too – what you see here previews that.
