By 1944, it was evident that Germany was losing the war, especially in the Eastern Front against the Soviet Red Army. Unwilling to give up Estonia, Hitler ordered a futile defense in the city of Narva, which fell on the shoulders of Dutch, Estonian, Norwegian, Danish and Hungarian volunteers.
