Описание к видео 6 Flowers You Can Plant in August

It's the start of a new month, so let's talk about what to plant in the coming weeks! I'm going to kick things off by talking about what flowers to plant in August (stay tuned for veggies) if you're a gardener in zones 9 or 10.

0:20 Intro
Here in San Diego, August is one of our hottest and driest months. You wouldn't normally be thinking about planning - much less PLANTING - cool weather crops, but this is exactly when we start to do it. September and even October can be much more like summer than Fall here sometimes, so what am I doing talking about getting ready for winter?

Because of the warm days and warm soil, many flowers can still be very happy this time of year. Days are getting shorter, though, so that's why succession planting is so key.

1:26 Zinnias
In this part of the garden, I have several crops mixed in, including zinnias. These are one of my favorites because they make really great cut flowers. They have long stems and beautiful blooms. This time of year, you can easily direct soil as long as your soil stays moist. If you have some plants that you started a few months ago, they might be looking a little raggedy. By succession planting, you'll have more plants in their prime waiting in the wings.

2:36 Gaillardia
Next to the zinnias, I have some gaillardia, also called blanket flower. Pollinators absolutely love this productive plant, and it's really resilient. It can grow in just about any soil type, and it can also easily re-seed on its own.

3:08 Strawflower
Speaking of seed, this strawflower is reaching maturity. The booms are spent, and the seeds are developing. If you cut these a little earlier, though, they make a fantastic cut flower for floral arrangements because they will last for months. They have a really cool texture, so I really recommend growing these because they're so fun. If you let them go to seed as I did here, they can also re-seed on their own.

4:00 Scarlet Sage
Moving on back, this sage has gone absolutely wild. If these plants get just a little bit of moisture, they will grow prolifically. They really like hot temperatures, but they'll maintain a green body with fantastic pops of red (or blue). Easy to take care of and that pollinators love, it's a great addition to every garden.

5:23 Scabiosa
Let's keep things moving along with another easy-to-grow flower: scabiosa. These will give you SO MANY blooms, and that also means tons and tons of seeds. To get started, you should have no problem with direct sowing them (keep that soil moist), but you can start them in trays too if you like. They will grow well into October and November, so you can still get them started.

6:33 Sunflower
Let's wrap things up with none other than the iconic sunflower. As long as they are in a full sun location, you can grow them year-round here in zones 9 and 10. We'll be planting them in November and even in December! That's the beauty of succession planting - as one plant gets old, a new one is ready to come up soon after.

It's so important to grow flowers as well as vegetables. They will make such a positive difference in your garden by helping create a diverse & strong ecosystem.
