At Slate and Mortar, we believe in the power of storytelling to inspire real change. Our latest collaboration with the University of Warwick aimed to spark meaningful conversations around mental health, using authentic student stories to encourage support-seeking and raise awareness of the vital services available on campus.

In this project, we captured the lived experiences of Warwick students through powerful, student-written narratives—each brought to life by talented student actors. With a sensitive topic like mental health, we worked closely with the university to ensure every story remained relatable and impactful, while carefully respecting the complexities of the subject matter.

Our approach involved:

Script editing to fine-tune the personal stories while maintaining their authenticity
Virtual rehearsals to align performances with the director’s vision
Cinematic filming with two cameras, capturing every nuance with precision
B-roll footage that adds a personal, relatable touch of student life on campus
Integration of a QR code to guide viewers towards essential mental health resources

By placing the actors against a simple grey backdrop, the focus stayed on their performances, amplifying the emotional depth of each story. The result? A compelling video that not only raises awareness but also encourages students to #GetWarwickTalking about mental health.

This video has become a valuable resource for the University of Warwick, helping to bridge the gap between students and the mental health support available to them. We’re proud to have created a video that will continue to empower students long after its release.
