Eren Yeager is the former protagonist and final antagonist of the Attack on Titan manga and anime series, the de facto leader of the Yeagerists, and the holder of the Attack Titan’s power.
Once a trainee on Paradis Island, Eren discovered his ability to transform into the Attack Titan and fought to protect humanity within the Walls from the Titans. However, after the mission to reclaim Shiganshina, Eren’s character began to change. Following several failed diplomatic efforts, he resolved to annihilate all life beyond Paradis using the Rumbling (Japanese: 地鳴らし, Jinarashi).
In the anime series, he is voiced by Yūki Kaji, and in the Russian dub, by Vlad Tokarev.
Biography
Past
Eren Yeager was the son of Grisha and Carla Yeager, who lived within the Walls. In his childhood, he became best friends with Armin Arlert and learned from him about the world beyond the Walls. When Eren was nine years old, his father, Grisha — a doctor — went to the Ackerman family’s home to treat Mrs. Ackerman and took Eren with him. Grisha also wanted Eren to befriend their daughter, Mikasa, since there were few children living within Wall Maria. However, when they arrived, Mikasa’s parents had already been murdered. Grisha decided to call the Military Police and told Eren to wait at the foot of the mountain.
Eren, however, did not wait. He found the bandits who had killed Mikasa’s parents and planned to sell her into slavery. Pretending to be a helpless boy, Eren managed to kill two of them, but the third captured him. Mikasa, frozen in shock, did not react — until Eren shouted to her, “Fight!” Due to her Ackerman blood, she instinctively obeyed, came to her senses, and killed the last kidnapper to save Eren. Later, Grisha returned and scolded Eren for his recklessness, as he could have been killed. After this event, Mikasa was adopted by the Yeager family.
In the year 845, when Eren was ten years old, Mikasa learned of his desire to join the Scout Regiment and told his parents. His mother opposed the idea, while Grisha supported it, promising to show Eren his basement upon his return from an errand. Shortly after, a colossal Titan appeared and easily breached Wall Maria, allowing Titans to invade. Eren and Mikasa rushed home, only to find their mother trapped under the debris of their house. They tried desperately to free her, but could not lift the beams. Carla begged them to flee so they wouldn’t die.
Hannes, a soldier of the Garrison and a family friend, arrived. Carla pleaded with him to save the children. Hannes initially intended to fight the approaching Titan but, upon seeing it up close, was paralyzed by fear. He grabbed Eren and Mikasa and fled, as Carla watched in tears. Eren and Mikasa witnessed their mother being devoured by the Smiling Titan. Eren, devastated and furious, lashed out at Hannes for running away. Hannes later placed them on a refugee boat and told Eren that he couldn’t save his mother because he was too weak — and that he himself couldn’t save Carla because he was a coward. They soon reunited with Armin. As they escaped, they saw the Armored Titan break through the inner wall. The three of them, along with many refugees, were evacuated beyond Wall Rose.
After the evacuation, Grisha found Eren, learned of Carla’s death, and took him into the forest. There, he injected Eren with a Titan serum, turning him into a mindless Titan, who then devoured Grisha — inheriting the power of the Attack Titan. Before regaining consciousness in a food storage facility with other refugees, Eren experienced fragmented memories of the transformation.
Over the next two years, Eren, Mikasa, and Armin worked in the fields alongside other refugees. Eventually, they decided to enlist in the military to fight back against the Titans.
War Against the Titans
For three years, Eren, Mikasa, and Armin trained in the 104th Cadet Corps, where they learned about Titan physiology, their weak spot, and how to use the Omni-Directional Mobility Gear (ODM gear). At first, Eren struggled with the training equipment, unable to balance himself, but after persistent effort, he managed to stay upright — only for a few seconds. It was later revealed that the gear he used had been faulty all along (not by accident, as it turned out).
During later training, Keith Shadis noted that Eren performed poorly in theory but excelled in combat, and that others viewed him as something of a leader. Ultimately, Eren ranked fifth among the top graduates, behind Mikasa Ackerman, Reiner Braun, Bertholdt Hoover, and Annie Leonhart.
