2019 is the year I took on learning how to play the banjo, which was a fair bit trickier than I'd imagined it would be. Anyway, here's the first song I wrote on the banjo, a murder Ballad called The Corpse and the Fruit Tree. I'd just woken up and I've left my tuner at a friend's house, so it's pretty rough and a little detuned, but I figured for old timey folk it fits the aesthetic. 🌙✨☕

The story is based on a true story.

Lyrics:

A wealthy man with property
And money to be spent
Gratuitously chose to eat
His profits in excess

His riches, they had been accrued
Through others' poverty
To build himself an empire
To fund his gluttony

He ate such foreign delicacies
No-one else could afford
Until one day his labourers
Agreed they'd take no more

His riches, they believed they'd earned
His wealth was truly theirs
And so they stabbed him with a knife
And pushed him down the stairs

They took his body to the cliffs
And threw him down the side
They left his flesh and bones to waste
Where ravens ate his eyes

But on that day he ate a fruit
From far exotic shores
And in the decomposing mess
A little tree was born

So obvious it was to all
Who saw that grim cliff face
Upon which grew a tree so strange
They did investigate

Whereupon they found the corpse
Broken, buried bones
But covered in such glamourous
And expensive clothes

The wealthy man had vanished
But now he had been found
His murderers were swiftly caught
And hanged that night in town

Their bodies dangled lifelessly
For their evil deeds
Which they wouldn't have comitted
Were they paid sufficiently

And thus concludes our story
And the truth that has been told
Is only those with money
Shall see justice in this world
