Metroland Media

Metroland Media was an exciting multi-media exhibition of short films, and photographic and text montages created as part of Usurp's digital arts learning programme led by 14-18 year olds that started in May 2010. Young people created their own artworks and exhibition programme.

The project offered hands on creative arts learning in photography and video,poetry and lyric writing, and music skills, alongside personal development, self-organisation and confidence building activities.

The Metroland Media group met weekly in creative workshops with professional artists and facilitators to develop and produce this project based on real life experiences, and aspirations for themselves and the world. Growing up without their families, their resilience, creativity and determination are an inspiration. The project offered reflective ways of thinking and questioning, and provided new visual and aural languages to help communicate their ideas and beliefs beyond the barriers of language, religion, background and culture.

These stop-motion animations were made by young unaccompanied teenagers coming from war torn countries seeking asylum.
