Former multiple gold medal winning Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz reflects on his career in the pool and the current state of the sport.

Mark Spitz, Former Olympic Swimmer (On being a swimming 'icon'):
"I think any sport that has had an icon come from it is always searching for the next Michael Jordan or the next Michael Phelps for that matter. It could be a long time in coming. It is human nature to want to know who is going to be the next star that we can follow and who is going to be the next inspiration for those in the sport of swimming or whatever the sport may be."

Mark Spitz, Former Olympic Swimmer (Question regarding where the next great influx of swimming talent will emerge from):
"Well they (China) have had great swimming champions from China in the past - especially the women. They did really well actually just in the past Olympic games in London (2012). So, those countries are emerging again. It is sort of the ebbs and the flows and that happens all over the world. It is not...America doesn't dominate or Australia doesn't dominate swimming like it did in the 60's and 70's."

Mark Spitz, Former Olympic Swimmer (Question regarding Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen and her record breaking performance in the Women's 400 metre individual medley at the 2012 Olympic Games):
"Certainly the performance stands on its own merits. World record swims and she drops her time by seconds from one year to the next. Obviously that might lead to suspicion. She was tested by the IOC (international Olympic Commission) and was found to be drug free - but with that being said we have to look at 'is the IOC testing for every drug that is performance enhancing drug out there? And the answer is, of course they are not and we know as a fact that a lot of the performance enhancing drugs that they test for on that list are old school. That they haven't been taken by the elite athletes for years. So, by design you have to say to yourself 'is it designed to let those fall through the cracks and not be found?' That is the speculation that needs to be examined and not her in particular - but that actual system within itself."
