Lesson on the Macrolide antibiotics including erythromycin, azithromycin and clarithromycin. Macrolides are antibiotics that end in the suffix -thromycin. Macrolides have good activity against gram positive and gram negative aerobes and are bacteriostatic through their ability to inhibit protein synthesis. Macrolide use also comes with risk of various adverse effects including GI upset, QT prolongation and allergic reactions.
