OM Systems: The Missed Opportunity of the Olympus Pen-F MkII

Street photography is an art form that thrives on portability, discretion, and style—qualities the original Olympus Pen-F embodied perfectly. Released in 2016, the Pen-F was a bold statement, merging retro aesthetics with innovative digital features. With its compact design, advanced technology, and unique customisation options, the Pen-F was a darling of street photographers. Despite its cult following, OM Systems (formerly Olympus) never followed up with a second iteration. This lack of a Pen-F MkII represents a missed opportunity to dominate the street photography market.

The original Pen-F was designed for photographers who value form and function. Its compact, rangefinder-style body was ideal for capturing candid moments without drawing attention. Olympus’ class-leading in-body image stabilization (IBIS) allowed for sharp handheld shots, even in dimly lit environments. The creative dial, which enabled fine-tuning of black-and-white and color profiles, was a unique feature, particularly appealing to photographers drawn to the timeless elegance of monochrome street photography. The camera exuded character, blending nostalgia with modern innovation, making it a perfect fit for the street photography ethos.

However, the Pen-F also had room for improvement. Its autofocus system, while adequate for its time, lagged behind competitors. The lack of weather sealing, a critical feature for outdoor shooting, limited its versatility. Yet, these shortcomings didn’t overshadow the camera’s appeal; they simply highlighted the potential of a Mark II version to refine and enhance an already stellar design.

A Pen-F MkII could have positioned OM Systems as a dominant player in the street photography niche. By addressing autofocus performance, adding weather sealing, and incorporating advances in sensor technology, the camera could have appealed not only to loyal Olympus users but also to a new wave of photographers seeking a stylish, capable tool. Enhancements to its already impressive IBIS and the inclusion of cutting-edge computational photography features—such as live ND filters or high-res handheld modes—could have set it apart in a crowded market.

OM Systems’ decision to forgo a Pen-F MkII may have stemmed from market pressures, shifting priorities, or internal restructuring during Olympus’ transition. Yet, this decision left a gap in a market where street photography continues to flourish, with brands like Fujifilm and Ricoh reaping the rewards of catering to this demographic. Cameras like the Fujifilm X100V and Ricoh GR III have become cultural icons among street photographers, demonstrating the potential for a thoughtfully designed, niche-oriented camera to succeed.

The Pen-F’s legacy endures, its design and philosophy still cherished by photographers worldwide. Yet, it’s hard not to imagine what a Pen-F MkII could have been: a compact, beautifully crafted powerhouse that redefined the possibilities of street photography.

OM Systems had the tools and the vision to make it happen. They just needed to take the shot.
