Australia Post has just released a set of four one-dollar coins with Australian dinosaurs on them. These coins are going into circulation, so you can actually get these 4 coins in your change! Each coin has a different dinosaur on it.

The 4 dinosaurs are:
The Kunbarrasaurus,
The Diamantinasaurus,
The Australovenator and
The Elaphrosaurine

You can get any one of these 4 coins, or possibly all 4 of them through the Australia Post checkouts if you pay with cash. But of course you can also buy sets with all 4 coins.

There are 2 folders you can buy to get the coins in uncirculated condition:

The first folder with the yellow sky has all 4 coins with Privy marks - the privy marks are letters D, I, N and O. Spelling DINO. This set is $20

The second folder has the 4 standard coins without privy marks for $12.

There is also a PNC for each coin. If you don't know, PNC stands for Philatelic Numismatic cover - and that just means it has both a Stamp and a coin

Even better, there is a PNC with a fifth coin that is not being released into circulation. This fifth coin has a dinosaur skeleton of the Australovenator and an envelope privy mark. According to the back of the PNC there are only 7,000 being released. There were other versions of this coin available at the Mint earlier this year, but this version with the envelope privy mark seems to be unique at this point.

Now this isn't the first time Australian circulating currency has had dinosaurs on them (ie Dorothy the Dinosaur from the Wiggles) but these new coins definitely celebrate a different side of our history, and I'm a fan of this new theme. I hope we get more prehistoric coins in the future!

Happy hunting
