ThreatFabric researchers identified Datzbro, a new Android Remote Access Trojan (RAT) distributed via Facebook groups that pose as communities for seniors interested in social trips and activities.

Victims were enticed into downloading malicious apps disguised as event registration tools, often through fake “Google Play” links. Once installed, Datzbro gave attackers powerful spyware and financial fraud features, including remote device control, screen overlays, audio/video capture, and keylogging.

The malware specifically targeted banking and crypto apps by filtering accessibility events for sensitive keywords like “password,” “PIN,” and “verification code.” Investigations uncovered Chinese-language code strings and a leaked desktop-based command-and-control application, indicating the malware was created by Chinese-speaking actors and is now freely shared among cybercriminal groups.

Campaigns have extended beyond Australia to Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, South Africa, and the UK, establishing Datzbro as a global threat.


RECOMMENDATIONS:

1. Be careful of online groups offering “exclusive” trips or community events. Scammers often use AI-generated photos and posts to make themselves seem legitimate.

2. Always install apps only from official app stores like Google Play or Apple’s App Store, and avoid downloading apps from links shared on social media or messaging apps.
