We solve systems of two linear equations using graphing, and using substitution.

We then turn to the method of elimination. The recommended steps to begin with:

Sketch a rough graph to show the approximate solution.
Multiply one or both equations by number(s) , so that when the equations are added one of the variables is eliminated.
Solve the resulting equation for the remaining variable.
Substitute this solution into one of the original equations and solve it for the other variable.
Check to see if the solution corresponds to a point near the intersection of the graphed lines.
Check by substituting the solutions into each of the original equations. If the solutions are correct each equation will simplify to an identity.
