Yoga Sutra 1.1 is the very first Sutra.

Atha Yoga Anusasanam

ATHA: Stop! Pay attention! Something very important is about to happen. Patanjali says that beginning to study these teachings is a commitment so we need to commit to this journey. He is asking us, "Are you in or out?"

YOGA: Introduces the subject matter we are going to learn about, and the student-teacher relationship that is crucial to this journey.

ANUSASANAM: These are lineage-based teachings. Yoga is taught and passed down to others from teacher to student. You literally "follow" the "experience" of a teacher who has had the experience themselves. You can't DO yoga, you LIVE it....experientially.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is the authoritative text on Yoga. It was scribed 2,300 years ago by the sage Patanjali and consists of 195 sutras. All of these Sutras provide practical tools to help the individual transform every aspect of his or her life with the aim of creating a clear, calm, focused, and stable mind that perceives the world clearly and makes good choices.
