‘The Sword of the Bastard Elf’ – Game Book Review - Friday Fantasy Show – Episode 188.

Quests come in all shapes and sizes and thus The Bottled Imp embarks on ‘The Sword of the Bastard Elf’ written by Herman S. Skull with illustrations by S. Jacob, first published by Two Fisted Fantasy in 2018.

Over the past 40 or so years, a number of game books have been published. Books that are games too! Yes, you, the reader, are the central character where you get to decide how the story unfolds.

‘The Sword of the Bastard Elf’ has a slight twist. You aren’t some brave, daring adventurer seeking glory, wealth, and love; you are a bastard elf who has been kicked out of home and only want a place to crash.

My first foray into the fantasy game book world, like a lot of keen thrill lovers, was battling my way through the Fantasy Fighting game books by Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson. In 2018, I had the pleasure of meeting the author at a game convention and curious to read a more adult game book. Just what strange and weird choices would I be confronted with? Boy, I was in for a surprise…

Warning: This is not for little kids! While there's nothing overtly sexual or extremely horrible going on here there are some very weird characters, something called a phalloknight, lots of codpieces, an unpleasant dragon and some violent situations which could put anything younger than a teenager off game books forever. Also they won't get the really good jokes.
