Proper screenplay format is essential for two reasons. Firstly, it signals a reader that your script is professionally written. Secondly, screenplay format is designed to emulate the experience of watching the film. When you read a well written script, you don’t feel like you’re reading, you feel like you’re watching a movie.

Improper screenplay format will have a reader dismiss the script before they ever give your story a chance. It's like trying to listen to music that's covered in static. It might be great music, but the listener won't know it.
