SHASHIKA MOORUTH. Shashika Mooruth is a household name in South Africa and abroad and her name has become synonymous with creativity and success in the artistic world. In many ways, Shashika represents the aspirations of many S.A artists who would love to achieve what she has in her career. To be recognised as a professional singer, to perform in many genres with a host of talented musicians, to record an album, record playback in movies, perform on television, produce professional videos and become an inspiration to many. These aspirations and much more have all been achieved by our own, home grown, Shashika Mooruth.
Shashika was just eight years old when she did her first public performance which was at the Luxmi Narian Temple in Mobeni Heights. Thereafter she was a regular at the Hindi Shiksha Sanghs Eistedfods. I remember attending the Kishore Kumar concert in 1976 when she shared the stage with this legendary artist. She also shared the stage and sang a duet with the legendary Mahendra Kapoor at Shah Jehan Cinema in 1977. Shashika Mooruth was then introduced to the masses in the late 70’s when she performed to around 30 000 spectators in Chatsworth at the “Milk Carnival” organised by the Durban Milk Publicity Council courtesy of the late Mr Amichand Rajbansi.
I remember the 1st time I met Shashika, she may have been about 14 years old and I rendered her musical accompaniment for a school concert. I was amazed at her singing ability, and could not think of an equal at that time that I knew of. Even at that tender age, she was able to capture her audience with undivided attention. Little interaction took place with us thereafter but much later in her career, we became close friends and I got to learn much more about her. Crucial in her singing career was the full support from her Mom Anjanie, who is Shashika’s greatest inspiration, and Late Dad, Mr Aniruth Mooruth, himself a respected promoter of cultural shows in Durban. Her parents had sacrificed a lot to see their daughter prosper in her career. Shashika sang with many groups in Durban of which her involvement with Saraswathi Shenaaz was most widely recognised. Her S.A.B.C recording with Shenaaz in the early 80’s became a bench mark of a new standard reached in S.A Indian music. Her song “Tera Aasra hai” from the movie DHUAN really stands out from this recording, not forgetting the Flute pieces played by Suresh Ragunath, with well-orchestrated music by Anil Deonarian and the Saraswathi Shenaaz musicians. Her next career leap was in 1984 with her recording of the album “Sneha” done in Mumbai. This may well have been the very first Original album recorded in India with a S.A artist. Thereafter there was no holding back in her destiny with stardom. Shashika’s endeavours and accolades from here on is too numerous to list in this humble post. Her worldwide performances and collaboration with international artist is enough to speak volumes of her achievments. But she is also very much in touch with South Africa where she still hosts her concerts for her loyal fans, which she treasures very much.
