(22 Oct 2019) Foreign diplomats and media were invited to the Neelum Valley on Tuesday to view the destruction to a village after Pakistani and Indian soldiers exchange fire in Kashmir on Sunday.
The visit was organised by the Pakistani army, who claim that "unprovoked cease-fire violations" by Indian troops killed five civilians and one soldier on Sunday, across the highly militarised Line of Control that divides Kashmir between Pakistan and India.
However, Indian military have said Pakistani soldiers targeted an Indian border post and civilian areas along the frontier, leaving two army soldiers and a civilian dead.
Maj. Gen. Asif Ghafoor, a spokesperson for Pakistan's military, said that the India's High Commissioner's Office had been invited to bring "foreign diplomats and media of their choice" to the affected Pakistani-administered area, to establish responsibility.
Meanwhile, those living in the Neelum Valley were still clearing debris from their destroyed houses.
"Please, do not destroy our properties, we are poor people. This was my house, where I earned a living for my family and myself," said local resident Saqib Mustafa.
India and Pakistan have a long history of bitter relations over Kashmir, which is divided between the rivals but claimed by both in its entirety.
The renewed fighting comes amid an ongoing lockdown in Kashmir that was put in place after India stripped the region of its semi-autonomy in early August.
