Cosmos is an ecosystem of independent blockchains that run parallel and scale with ease using Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) consensus algorithms, like Tendermint. The vision of Cosmos is to create an Internet of Blockchains that will operate as a network, allowing communication and interoperability in a decentralized way. Cosmos is optimal for a variety of use cases because it enables blockchains to process transactions quickly, communicate with other blockchains in the ecosystem, and maintain independence and security. Using open-source tools like Tendermint, developers can use Cosmos to easily build custom, secure, scalable and interoperable blockchain applications and dApps. Cosmos enables blockchains to transfer value with each other through IBC (Inter Blockchain Communication protocol) and Peg-Zones, and allows blockchain applications to scale to millions of users through horizontal and vertical scalability solutions. The main goal of Cosmos is to build an infrastructure that can be easily implemented by all other co-existing blockchain networks without compromising the usability of the software.
ae Kwon and Ethan Buchman are the two skilled developers who co-founded the Cosmos network in 2014. At the same time, they created Tendermint, which is the consensus algorithm that powers Cosmos. The Cosmos whitepaper was later published by Kwon and Buchman, and the software was released in 2019. Cosmos was developed and launched with the help of The Interchain Foundation (ICF), which is a Swiss non-profit organization that funds open-source blockchain projects.
ATOM is the native token of Cosmos and can be used for holding, spending, sending or staking. It plays a key role in maintaining interoperability between all zones in the Cosmos network, and by owning and staking ATOM, users gain the ability to vote on network upgrades. Investors who suspect that developers will migrate to frameworks that enable them to launch custom blockchains, may decide to add ATOM to their investment portfolios. ATOM has an exact total coin supply of +. This coin is not mined but instead, it is earned through staking.
To buy ATOM, you need an account with a popular exchange like Binance, Huobi Global, and Gate.io, which facilitates the trading of ATOM. Once you have an account, depending on what trading pairs the exchange has available, you can deposit bitcoin, dollars, or stablecoins as funding. Alternatively, you can use exchanges that offer order books, or you could use a decentralized exchange to buy ATOM.
The Cosmos staking module enables ATOM token holders to secure the chain by locking their ATOM, in exchange for transaction fees and also gives holders rights to participate in an open governance process to exercise their voting rights. Interchain Accounts allow users to access the entire Interchain through their single Cosmos Hub account and the Cosmos Gravity DEX (decentralized exchange) enables users to seamlessly swap digital assets from all over the interchain.
Although Cosmos doesn’t support smart contracts, it has prioritized security and interoperability and supports the development of decentralized applications (dApps). Cosmos enables all blockchains in the ecosystem to retain their independence and governance power by allowing them to set their own rules, preventing conflict from arising between the different blockchain communities. The Cosmos ecosystem focuses on the interoperability and scalability of different blockchain protocols to encourage independent blockchains to operate as part of a greater network.
