A growing vehicle backlog is clogging the Port of Antwerp-Bruges as new U.S. tariffs under President Donald Trump slash car exports from Europe. On Friday, July 18, Belgian shipping officials reported a sharp 15.9% decline in vehicle exports to the United States in the first half of 2025.

International Car Operators (ICO), a major roll-on/roll-off terminal at the port, has seen a 15% year-over-year drop in shipments, with Managing Director Alain Guillemyn warning that the facility is now operating at 80–85% capacity. He attributed the congestion to market "uncertainty" driven by both U.S. tariffs and broader geopolitical tensions.

Trump has threatened to raise tariffs on European Union goods to 30% starting August 1, intensifying pressure on Brussels to reach a trade deal. Automakers and shipping companies are rushing to push shipments through before the deadline, but the port's congestion is becoming unmanageable.

For months, EU officials and auto industry leaders have urged Washington to roll back the elevated 27.5% tariff on European-made vehicles—a stark increase from the 2.5% rate before Trump’s presidency.

The standoff threatens to disrupt transatlantic trade and raises fresh concerns over the global automotive supply chain.
