Hello! My name is Kelsey Cobb. My name is sign is K- cheek COBBlunt. I am currently a Doctoral Student attending Gallaudet University in their Educational Doctoral Program. I need to introduce my dissertation topic. My topic is still in the development stage, but I can share with you where I am starting. I am looking into the referral process of Deaf/Hard of Hearing students with disabilities. This topic can be a bit controversial in the Deaf Education Community. What considerations are being made during the IEP process for our DeafDisabled students? Considerations that I have witnessed are Autism, medical needs, behavior and other factors. I am curious about the discussion of language access. Yes, I concede that I have witnessed discussion about language plans. Often describing language in a more functional approach, such as offering AAC devices, pictures, and other functional based communication. However, that seems more focused on their expressive skills. What about our DeafDisabled students' receptive language skills? How does this impact their thinking when considering placement? When looking at our local DHH programs, they are not foundational set up to support students with extensive needs. So again I want to look at the referral process, and how we are m making decisions that are supporting our DeafDisabled students. I plan to investigate this referral process through a DeafDisabled framework, DeafTeachers Framework, and many more! My topic continues to be fluid and is a work in progress. Wish me luck!
