This very old violin is estimated to have been constructed in the early 20th century. It has characteristics of a French design but is unlabelled. At the request of a violinist, Schnefsky took it apart and reglued it together using modern synthetic glues, in order to replace the animal hide glue that is traditionally used to bind the parts together.The reason this violin was chosen for the project is that the purfling is etched in and is not inlaid wood strips glued with hide glue. It had original oil varnish, not alcohol based varnish which often contained insect shell as a pigment. After cleaning it received one thin coat of modern violin oil varnish. In addition it received a new ebony fingerboard, bridge, soundpost, ebony tuning pegs, endpin, and tailpiece. The wood of the back plate appears to not be Maple, but an unknown timber with a dark hue and close fibre.
