I’ve always loved the raspberry cordial scene in Anne of Green Gables — that mix of good intentions, hospitality and chaos. So for the first episode of The Storybook Kitchen, I decided to make a real Victorian raspberry cordial the way Marilla might have.

The recipe comes from an 1826 cookbook, and it’s made with raspberries, vinegar, and sugar.. no currant wine in sight. While we wait for it to simmer, we’ll talk about what hosting meant in Anne’s world and how women in the late 1800s expressed care and refinement through the rituals of tea and visiting.
