My first introduction to Steely Dan was through an old basketball VHS tape called NBA Jam Session (shoutout to all the 90s basketball fans out there!). This was way before we started playing music... a time when Michael Jordan ruled the court, the Nets were still in New Jersey, and opening a fresh pack of Topps basketball cards was the thing I looked forward to most. This tape, a collection of NBA clips in music video format, had a segment where it celebrated the hall of famers of the older eras. With Steely Dan's "Reelin' In The Years" in the background, it showed plays from all the greats, dating back to the 1960s Boston Celtics. I didn't know who Steely Dan was at the time, but I did know who Walt Frazier was and I also knew I liked that song. I watched that tape so many times just trying to recreate the dunks with my Koosh ball hoop. Man... I could talk about the 90s NBA all day, but that's not why we are here!! We are here because Steely Dan is an awesome band!

Even if they aren't your cup of tea, I think Steely Dan is a band where anyone can detect the immense level of talent and musicianship this band had. Their recordings are sooo polished sounding, even by today's standards... let alone 1972! If you haven't listened to them in a while, put on their "Can't Buy A Thrill" record and kick back. Or go on eBay and pick up a copy of NBA Jam Session and push that into your VCR! Either way, you will have a good time!
