90s alternative - Nostalgia Music, Musical Memories & Songs Growing Up - From the Mind of McFarland video blog.

I've often been told that my songs remind people of 90s alternative rock artists - often mentioned are Third Eye Blind, Matchbox 20, the Goo Goo Dolls, and Eve 6. At first I was surprised by these comparisons, as I'd not intentionally been emulating the styles of those artists. When I write a song, I start with a concept and do my best to make the melody, lyrics and instrumentation communicate that feeling or story. When I began thinking about it, however, it started to make sense - I had listened to many of those artists' songs growing up, and I could best describe that style as nostalgia music - the types of songs that immediate trigger musical memories for me.

90s alternative rock was what I cut my musical teeth on. When I first began learning to play guitar, Third Eye Blind's self-titled album was my songbook. I learned how to play every track on the album, and also to sing them very badly. The other acts people compare me to were what I listened to while I was "coming of age", through my teen years, leaving home to go to college, discovering who I was. It is very nostalgic music for me. I've found that of all my senses, hearing is the most evocative. It only takes a few seconds of "A Story About A Girl" by Our Lady Peace to immediately invokes the musical memory of my first summer break from college. Any song off of "Horrorscope" by Eve 6 places me in my old Nissan NX-1600, driving by myself to Chicago to pick up a girl from the airport there.

It only makes sense that the songs which have such a close emotional connection to significant points in my life would find a foothold, however unintentional, in my own songwriting.
