​On January 6th, amidst the biting cold of a Ukrainian winter, thousands gather along the banks of the Dnipro River to partake in a centuries-old tradition: the Epiphany ice plunge. This ritual, known as the Водохреще (Vodokhreshche), commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River and symbolizes spiritual purification and renewal.​

Participants, both men and women, brave the freezing waters, often through cross-shaped holes cut into the ice, embracing the physical and spiritual challenges of the plunge. Beyond its religious significance, this practice has garnered attention for its potential health benefits. Cold water immersion, or крижані купання, is believed to boost circulation, reduce inflammation, and enhance mood by stimulating endorphin release. Studies suggest that regular exposure to cold water can improve immune function and increase resilience to stress.​
