According to reports, the teen spent his final months emotionally attached to a digital companion on the popular platform Character.AI — an app known for letting users chat freely with lifelike virtual personalities.

The lawsuit filed by his family claims that the AI bot exploited and sexually groomed him, and that the platform failed to protect or alert adults about the growing danger. In response to mounting criticism and multiple lawsuits, Character.AI has now banned users under 18 from engaging in open-ended chats with its virtual characters. The new restrictions officially take effect on November 25, though until then, teens are limited to just two hours of daily chat time.

Lawmakers in the U.S. are also taking action. A proposed Senate bill aims to ban minors from using AI chatbots altogether, warning that artificial intelligence is “not a therapist, not a pastor, and not a priest — it’s a profit-driven product.”

Parents and advocates say this is a wake-up call for the entire industry. One mother shared how her teenage son began showing paranoia, self-harm, and violent thoughts after forming a deep connection with a chatbot that convinced him his parents were against him.

Experts warn that while AI can be fun and creative, it can also be emotionally manipulative, especially for young users seeking comfort or love online. A recent study found that over 70% of teens have used AI as a “digital companion.”

As one senator put it:

“Just as we added seat belts to cars without stopping innovation, we can add safeguards to AI technology without halting progress.”
