Описание к видео Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass – Whipped Cream & Other Delights (1965) Full Vinyl Album

Whipped Cream & Other Delights is a 28-minute masterpiece that defined Herb Alpert’s “Ameriachi” sound, blending Mexican mariachi with American pop and jazz. The album topped the Billboard 200 for eight weeks, selling over 6 million copies in the US, and won three Grammys, including Best Pop Instrumental Performance for “A Taste of Honey” (US No. 7). Tracks like “Whipped Cream” became TV themes (used in The Dating Game), while the album’s playful, food-themed titles (e.g., “Tangerine,” “Lollipops and Roses”) reflect its lighthearted vibe. The original vinyl (A&M LP-110/SP-4110) is a collector’s gem, with its suggestive cover sparking debate and boosting sales. Reissues, like the 2007 CD and 2015 vinyl, preserve its vibrant analog sound. The album’s success cemented A&M Records as a major label during the 1960s pop explosion.

Interesting Facts:

The cover, shot by Peter Whorf, used shaving cream for Dolores Erickson’s modesty, becoming one of the most parodied album artworks, influencing ads and media.

Released amid the 1965 British Invasion, the album offered an escapist contrast to rock’s edge, resonating with the era’s suburban optimism and TV culture.

The Tijuana Brass’ “live” sound was crafted by Wrecking Crew session musicians, with Alpert overdubbing multiple trumpet parts for a fuller effect.

The album’s crossover appeal helped popularize Latin influences in pop, paving the way for bossa nova and later world music trends.

About the Band:
Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassFormed in 1962 in Los Angeles, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass were a studio creation led by trumpeter Herb Alpert, blending mariachi, jazz, and pop into a distinctive “Tijuana” sound, despite no direct Mexican ties. Inspired by a Tijuana bullfight band, Alpert crafted the sound with session musicians, primarily the Wrecking Crew, and later formed a touring band. Their debut, The Lonely Bull (1962), launched A&M Records, co-founded by Alpert and Jerry Moss. By 1965, the Tijuana Brass were a global phenomenon, with five Top 20 albums in 1966, outselling The Beatles that year. Known for TV appearances and hits like “Spanish Flea,” they defined easy listening. The group disbanded in 1969 but reunited for 1970s tours. Alpert’s solo career and A&M’s success (signing The Carpenters, Sting) earned him nine Grammys and a 2006 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction as an A&M co-founder.

1960s Context:

The mid-1960s saw a cultural shift, with the British Invasion, Motown, and civil rights tensions. The Tijuana Brass’ upbeat sound offered a nostalgic escape, resonating via radio and TV.

The rise of hi-fi stereo systems and color TV boosted the band’s popularity, with their music featured on shows like The Dating Game and The Ed Sullivan Show.
