The key is internal motivation! When kids are internally motivated to do better, the change will be meaningful and lasting.

The 3 pillars of intrinsic motivation are:

1️⃣Competence: whether the child believe they are able to do what is expected. Its all about the skills. When a child has the skills, they find a way.

2️⃣Connectedness: it’s about the quality of the relationship. When a child feels connected to and safe with the adult that makes the request, they’re more than happy to meet the expectations.

3️⃣Autonomy: having agency over our decisions is a basic human need. Kids do better when they have a sense of control.

So if your kiddo seems “unmotivated”, ask these questions:
Do they have the skills they need to meet my expectations?
Do they feel connected to me? Is our relationship secure?
Do they feel too controlled and need more autonomy?
