‘Traumatising’ Bali boat ride sparks warning for tourists | Yahoo Australia

21-year-old Laura Jaye took a popular boat route between neighbouring islands of Bali earlier this month and endured over two hours of violent sea conditions.

The boat ride from Lombok to Nusa Penida in Indonesia initially appeared to be fine, however, in a sign of what was to come, 20 minutes into the journey, the crew started to hand out “doggy poo bags” and “sea sickness tablets”.

Jaye claims she wasn’t warned that she had booked to travel along a boat route which is notorious for bumpy sea conditions and she was barely able to hold her head up from sea sickness.

Jaye told Yahoo News Australia, “The boat felt like it was going to capsize, the waves were going over the top of the boat and everyone on the roof was absolutely soaked through. There were girls down the front crying and people trying to call their families. It was really quite traumatising.”

Jaye claims the crew did not explain what was happening and did little to reassure passengers the conditions were to be expected on the route, causing further unrest.

The route is known to be particularly tumultuous during the Indonesian wet season (November-April), however rough conditions can occur at any time.

Tourists have been accused of overlooking water safety in Indonesia before, with the country frequently experiencing fatal accidents despite water transport safety regulations improving.
