How will the Affordable Care Act affect my Medicare benefits?

I want to let you know that I'm turning 65 in the month of May. And just like many of you, I was concerned about how the Affordable Care Act also known as "Obamacare" will affect my Medicare benefits.

In a recent publication, Julie Bataille, spokesperson for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, stated,
"We want to reassure Medicare beneficiaries that they are already covered, their benefits aren't changing, and the marketplace doesn't require them to do anything different."

And there's more good news, some of your benefits are getting better. You should be able to pay less for prescriptions.

You'll see an increase in savings as the donut hole closes. The donut hole will close completely by 2020. Then, you'll pay just 25% for all your prescriptions.

Your option to choose a doctor will not change.

Medicare recipients will now receive a free wellness exam every year. Your doctor will be able to create a personalized preventative care program to keep you healthier, longer.

Most screenings will now be free like your mammograms and colonoscopies. Checking for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol is also included as well as immunizations and diet counseling. If you're a smoker, get free counseling to kick the habit.

This is good news for all of us as we enter or continue to be part of the Medicare family.
