After a night of fierce wind and rain, Johnsy is shocked to see one leaf still clinging to the vine. Inspired by the leaf’s resilience, she regains her will to live and recovers. However, it is later revealed that the leaf was actually a trompe l'oeil painting created by Behrman during the storm. He contracted pneumonia while painting it and died shortly after.
