In the fourth episode of A to Z of Photography, we are discussing Depth of Field (DoF) in photography, which is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in an image that appear acceptably sharp and in focus. By adjusting camera settings, a photographer can change how much of the scene appears sharp versus blurry, giving powerful creative control.

Shallow depth of field means a small part of the image is sharp, with the rest blurred. It's ideal for portraits and product shots where the subject needs to stand out from the background.

Deep depth of field means most of the image, from front to back, is in focus. This style is best for landscapes, street, and architecture photography where every detail matters

Aperture, distance to subject, and lens focal length all affect DoF—wide apertures (low f-numbers) for shallow DoF; narrow apertures (high f-numbers) for deep DoF.

Mastering depth of field allows photographers to guide the viewer’s eye and either spotlight a subject or showcase an entire scene’s complexity.
