Rhapsody in Blue (Gershwin 1924, arr F Grote, arr Kopplin 2009)
Rhapsody in Blue is a musical composition by George Gershwin for solo piano and jazz band written in 1924, which combines elements of classical music with jazz-influenced effects. The composition was orchestrated by Ferde Grofé three times, in 1924, in 1926, and finally in 1946. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Always recognizing the promising work of Students, Dr. Kopplin prides himself in presenting them in the Cal Poly venue. Ms. Kateri Lirio performs the solo piano work. Dr. Kopplin stumbled upon her love for this work while strolling to his office. The industrious Dr. Kopplin remembered that Rhapsody was initially written for and performed by Jazz Band and built a hybrid orchestra/jazz band for tonights show. As he explains in his monologue, Rhapsody is best known for its lyrical and deliberate Orchestral-style but he wanted to also show the livelier Big Band Jazz-style that it was initially for written as well. Hence, the lengthy video.
Incorporating a reworked classical chart with a 1930s Benny Goodman-style chart, add an innovative new Millennium Progressive edgy social-commentary chart, then sprinkle in a 1960's Pop Top 40 Chart Paul Simon work, and you have the ever-ambitious Dr. Kopplin program.
Mr. Alex Budman, Dr. Kopplins longtime friend, musician, and tonights Guest Artist performs the Distinctive Clarinet trill opening. Alex Budman is an active musician of 20 years with performing experience on all saxophones, clarinets, flutes, electric and acoustic basses.
